The Christmas Shoes Television Movie Review
by C. Bailey-Lloyd

When CBS broadcast the made-for-television movie, "The Christmas Shoes," (based on Ms. Donna VanLiere's novel - (c) The Chrismas Shoes) it embarked on an altruistic journey of the heart and soul. Portraying two separate families, The Christmas Shoes exhibits true-to-life characters that are dealing with each owns' turmoil.

In the story, Robert Andrews, a young mechanic is critically trying to prepare himself and his young son, Nathan for the imminent death of his beautiful wife, Maggie, (who is dying from a rare heart defect). On the opposing side of town, a different story unfolds as Kate Layton is battling the effects of her husband's drive for success in becoming an attorney. Shortly before the Christmas holidays, Kate informs her husband, Layton that she wants a divorce due to his always being away from home.

In a twist of fate, these two families intercede each other as Layton is out Christmas shopping. While standing at the check-out counter, Layton encounters Nathan attempting to buy a pair of shoes (for his mother as a final token of his love). The ambition-driven lawyer discovers a part of his heart that had been missing for so long and helps the young boy pay for his mother's gift.

A magically insiteful and inspirational movie, "The Christmas Shoes," is accompanied by its (identically titled) theme song (inspired by the story). Below are the lyrics, as written and sung by the recording group, NewSong, a Christian band that helped propel the story even more in the holiday season of hope.

The Christmas Shoes - as sung by NewSong

It was almost Christmas time There I stood in another line Try'n to buy that last gift or two I'm really in the Christmas mood Standing right in front of me Was a little boy waiting anxiously Pacing around like little boys do And in his hands he had A pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old He was dirty from head to toe And when it came his time to pay I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size Could you hurry Sir? Daddy says there's not much time You see she's been sick for quite a while And I know these shoes will make her smile And I want her to look beautiful If Momma meets Jesus tonight

They counted pennies for what seems like years And cashier says son there's not enough here He searches is pockets franticly And he turned and he looked at me And he said Momma made Christmas good in our house Most years she just did without Tell me Sir What am I gonna do? Some how I gotta buy her these Christmas shoes

So I lend the money down I just had to help him out And I'll never forget The look on his face When he said Momma's gonna look so great

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size Could you hurry Sir? Daddy says there's not much time You see she's been sick for quite a while And I know these shoes will make her smile And I want it to look beautiful If Momma meets Jesus tonight

I know I won't regret some help as he thanked me and ran out I know that God sent that little boy to remind me What Christmas is all about

I want her to look good If Momma meet's Jesus tonight.

A heartwarming story that tugs at your heartstrings and compels you by its holiday heroism. Displaying an ultimate transformation of the heart and soul, "The Christmas Shoes" is sure to become a favorite Holiday classic and a can't miss television movie. "The Christmas Shoes" will be aired once again this year on CBS on December 21 at 8pm EST/7 pm CST.
