Organic Produce is grown using animal or plant fertilizers without the utilization of chemically produced fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics or pesticides. Organic produce is governed under USDA regulations stating that organic produce must be labeled with one of four labels: 1) 100% Organic Ingredients, 2) 95-100% Organic Ingredients, 3) 70-95% Organic Ingredients or 4) Less than 70% Organic Ingredients. {Only the top two, preceding categories are permitted to use the USDA Organic Symbol.}
Organic produce is regulated by prohibition of the use of irradiation, sewage sludge, or genetically modified organisms in organic production. Regulations also include NOSB recommendations regarding which substances can and cannot be utilized in organic produce production and processing. Furthermore, organic produce is consumer assured when labeled "organic" by compliance with the standards of the USDA.
