VEGETARIAN/ORGANIC FOODS are grown using animal or plant fertilizers without the utilization of chemically produced fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics or pesticides. Vegetarian/Organic foods are governed under USDA regulations stating that vegetarian/organic foods must be labeled with one of four labels: 1) 100% Vegetarian/Organic foods' Ingredients, 2) 95-100% Vegetarian/Organic foods' Ingredients, 3) 70-95% Vegetarian/Organic foods' Ingredients or 4) Less than 70% Vegetarian/Organic foods' Ingredients. {Only the top two, preceding categories are permitted to use the USDA Organic Symbol.}
Vegetarian/Organic foods are regulated by prohibition of the use of irradiation, sewage sludge, or genetically modified organisms in vegetarian/organic foods' production. Regulations also include NOSB recommendations regarding which substances can and cannot be utilized in vegetarian/organic foods' production and processing. Furthermore, vegetarian/organic foods are consumer assured when labeled "vegatarian/organic" by compliance with the standards of the USDA.
