Massage Therapists
Massage therapists are licenced practitioners who perform a variety of natural therapeudics, including deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, acupressure, Lomi Lomi, infant and prental massage, sports massage, and myofascial release therapy, among other somatic modalities.
While each educational background may vary, typical massage therapists have received a minimum of 300 - 500 hours of hands-on training in natural health sciences like anatomy, physiology, pathology, and kinesiology. In addition, before prospective massage therapists can achieve licensure, they must complete practical training in various bodywork modalities (usually deep tissue, Swedish massage, and sports massage) as well as basic client communication skills; and sometimes, CPR and first aid. Many massage schools, however, have begun offering a greater assortment of massage techniques, including craniosacral therapy, geriatric massage, lymphatic drainage, and reflexology, among several others.
Massage therapists play an essential role in the complementary healthcare industry, as more and more patients are turning to natural healing therapies and treatments for common health disorders like musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, stress reduction, and other health conditions.
Depending on education, experience and location, massage therapists can earn a respectable living; and must maintain licensure by continuing education through local training seminars and schools.
Today's massage therapists may work in the public health sector like hospitals and other medical facilities, but are commonly found in private practices, at sporting events, in health spas, resorts, and even aboard major cruise lines.
