Pregnancy and birth are a two-in-one deal during a time in which a female bares a maturing infant within her body. Generally, a woman's pregnancy to birth time typically lasts about nine months.
When a female egg and a male sperm conjoin in a woman's body, conception occurs; thus fertilizing the egg. The fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterine lining inside the woman's abdomen. For the following nine months, the egg grows within the uterus into a fully developed baby.
During the first eight weeks of pregnancy, all the infant's major organs begin to develop. At this stage, the infant is considered an embryo. After the ninth week of pregnancy through birth, the infant's body grows in size. Further maturation of organs continue as well. During this time, the baby is called a fetus.
Pregnancy and birth are life-altering events in a woman's life.
It would be beneficial to enroll into a Lamaze course whereby compassionate instructors assist pregnant women with or without their counterparts to more fully understand how to deal with labor and birth -- mentally, physically, and emotionally.
From conception to labor, to the actual event of birth, a woman's body goes through dramatic changes. After about 40 weeks of pregnancy, the inevitable task of childbirth is at hand. Strenuous and exhausting, contractions of labor are a result the uteris tightening and releasing itself. As the contractions become more regular, the cervix begins to thin as it prepares for dilation. Once the cervix has reached a diameterof 10 centimeters, birth is just about to occur. There are four stages of labor. The first phase is called cervical dilation. The second is the pushing phase. The third comes postbirth of the baby and delivery of the placenta. And the final stage is the mother's recovery period. There is no time frame on labor as labor and birth are unique to each woman. Typically, labor has a 12-14 hour span. However, contractions may precipitate the actual birth for several days in advance.
