After his or her residency, an orthopedic surgeon examines, diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system through surgical and conservative means. Orthopedic surgeons may also help patients by placing mechanical devices as well. Aside from surgery, orthopedic surgeons also reduce and immobilize fractures by open or closed methods, utilizing devices such as braces, casts and splints.

Furthermore, orthopedic surgeons direct nurses in procedures from preoperative and postoperative care adn operating room techniques.
