Psychotherapist

What exactly is a psychotherapist? A psychotherapist is a medically-degreed counselor who aids individuals with their personal emotional, social and mental functions. Furthermore, a psychotherapist will define a course of treatment that meets the specific needs of an individual, couple or family. In a psychotherapy session, the psychotherapist will encourage verbal dialogue betweent the client and him/herself. After gathering information and doing a problem assessment, the psychotherapist will set up a course of treatment that will usually consist of subsequent psychotherapy sessions; working toward a defined goal in mind.

Because a psychotherapist can diagnose mental and emotional conditions, including alcohol and/or substance abuse -- there are many forms of treatment available. While some psychotherapists utilize specific treatment plans, others use alternative treatments like hypnotherapy.

A psychotherapist helps a patient to reverse behavior patterns and reactions that lead to mental illness. Psychotherapists also assist individuals with identifying the particular elements in his/her life that cause mental/emotional discrepancies. Some other forms of treatment which psychotherapists may incorporate into goal-setting plans are cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, family therapy and support groups that are designed to meet the needs of the client.
