Veterinarians

Veterinarians Veterinarians perform a vital role in animal healthcare today. From family pets, livestock, zoo animals, wildlife and even laboratory animals, veterinarians use their education to help and heal. A veterinarian must graduate from an accredited college and be licensed to practice before taking on this important task. Some attributes prospective veterinarians must possess are a love for animals and a desire to make a difference.

What is Veterinary Care

Specialty veterinarians utilize their education to prevent disease in humans carried by animals through clinical research on human and animal health complications. Some apply their research to broaden the spectrum of fundamental and theoretical knowledge to develop new paths to utilize education. Far and wide, though, most veterinarians are private practitioners who focus on animal care. Small animal veterinarians usually care for our adopted family members, like dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles and other common household pets. In clinical practices, veterinarians diagnose animal health problems, administer vaccinations, and medicate animals that may have infections or disease. Veterinarians also treat and dress wounds, set fractures, carry out surgery and give owners advice about feeding their pets, animal behavior and even breeding.

Equine veterinarians deal exclusively with larger animals like horses and cows. These veterinarians make house calls, or rather, farm or ranch calls. Most of their itinerary includes preventive care and maintenance, testing and vaccinations, and consultations with owners on animal production, feeding, housing and other problems that may arise; such as treating and dressing wounds, setting fractures, surgery and even performing cesarean sections on pregnant animals. Veterinarians sometimes are faced with hard decisions like euthanization of animals when necessary. Some veterinarians are animal communications specialists, and are able to understand the exact needs of animals by communicating with them. Veterinarian inspectors check livestock for transmissible diseases. Some veterinarians are crucial in the meat, poultry and egg production and processing plants, as these veterinarian inspectors examine and enforce government regulations regarding food safety.
