Greek Mythology

Greek Mythology sparks one's imagination with visions of gods and goddesses of an ancient time long ago. Greek mythology, stemming from clay tablets of the Mycenaean civilization, originate between 1400-1200 B.C.

Resources leading to Greek mythology go back to the infamous works of Hesiod and Homer around 700 B.C. In their works, the "Theogony", the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey;" these great poets of ancient Greece, introduced characters such as Poseidon -- the chief Mycenaen god, and the Titans -- offspring of Gaea and Uranus. To them, Greek mythology was a portal to identifying the origins of the world, its fundamental roots and how life came to exist. Ancient Greek mythology tells of Cronus, (the youngest of the Titans), creating the world during his reign. Greek mythology also holds claims of divinities, numbering in the thousands; including gods or goddesses that reigned over death, night and more.

Greek mythology also depicts the Olympians of being the most powerful congregation of gods of the time. After the Titans, the widely-known Olympian gods and goddesses, (such as Zeus - ruler of all divinities, Aprhrodite - goddess of love, and Helios - the sun; just to name a few) were idolized before and during the Trojan War by the Greek heroes and Heroins of the time -- with claims of gods and goddesses as their ancestors.

Greek mythology, along with many other mythical legends are believed to have come from historical events that, over time, became modified and exaggerated; or, some scholars believe that myths were an attempt to find understanding to the origins of time, itself. The Greek scholar -- Euhemerus theorized that Greek mythology was indeed based on actual events but became distored through the ages.

Throughout the history of mankind, controversial views revolving around Greek mythology and other legends have stirred fantasy and imagination across the globe. Did gods like Hermes and legends of Zeus's creation of Pandora truly exist? One could propose that Greek mythology is based on mankind's quest for immortal knowledge -- created solely for the purpose of understanding life and the reason for all life existence. Furthermore, Greek mythology is also tied to astrological views that may or may not have baring upon an individual's sign. Whether mythical or real, Greek mythology has spawned the greatest works of time, and has incited heightened awareness on a universal plane.
