What, praytell, is a LABYRINTH? A labyrinth, relative to wholeness, is an ancient symbol. Combining imagery in a circle and spiral form, it leads to a path of purpose and emotional well-being.
Representative of a journey to one's core and back to the external environment, a labyrinth is utilized for the purpose of meditation and prayer. Similar to a mandala, it is a guidance tool in which one can relate to an experience by "walking it." Metaphorically, it is a method of "traversing life's grand adventure." Symbollical of sacred space, the labyrinth is an evolutional process of transcending one from his/her ego to his/her psyche.
Often confused with a maze, a labyrinth is not a puzzle that needs solving; a labyrinth, in fact, may appear to look like a maze but specifically -- it has only one way in and one way out. A labyrinth
leads one on a continuous pathway to the center and then out once more again.
A "right-brain" practice, a labyrinth uses intution, creativity and imagery. Because it is a continuing circle, a labyrinth leads one to only one choice. One can choose to enter the labyrinth or not. Basically, it transfers one to higher consciousness and into a spiritual path of awareness that lead one to a broader comprehension of understanding of who one is. Its fundamental goal is that while you "walk the labyrinth," you envision your life's goal or destiny; in the process, you learn many things about yourself. Some things to ask yourself while walking the labyrinth are what sights and sounds do you envision? What do they mean? Do you feel lost or do you like certain areas of the labyrinth? Of course there are many other questions one can ask of the labyrinth, but the answers are already there...in an individual's higher consciousness. The labyrinth is merely a portal to discover understanding to one's higher self.
