MEDITATION is an excellent medium to attain a state of peace and relaxation. By thinking deeply for a period of time, meditation can heighten our awareness and spiritually purify us. Meditation is comprised of breathing excercises,or practiced through sound, word, or prayer repetition, or by focusing on a specified visual image. Meditation is widely used in religious practice but for some, it is used for simple relaxation and spiritual blissfulness. Roman Catholics, for example, meditate while praying upon a rosary. In Yoga, meditation involves sitting positions, breathing control and other physicalities.
Transcendental Meditation is also a technique used to relax the body. This form of meditation became popular during the 1970's. (Transcendental, meaning the process of reaching a state of pure consciousness.) By sitting silently in a comfortable position, your eyes closed, you whisper repetitive mantras (peaceful-sounding word from Hindu scripture). Usually, this meditation lasts for 15-20 minutes in the mornings and evenings before meals.
Scientific research has found that bodily changes are present during meditation. In meditation, our breathing rate and oxygen intake decrease through meditation. However, blood pressure and heart rate are also reduced. Meditation activates the alpha waves (brain waves that are prominent during relaxation) that help us reduce our anxiety and aggression levels, therfore reducing stress. Meditation is beneficial to us, physically, mentally and emotionally.
