One of the seven great wonders, some say the pyramids were constructed by an estimated 20-30,000 workers at Giza over a duration of 80+ years as tombs for Egyptian kings. A great architect of his time, Imhotep built the first known pyramid for King Zoser around 2650 B.C. Most of the pyramid erection occurred during the flood of the Nile River between 3000 B.C. and A.D. 476. Made from huge, limestone blocks that were probably polished by hand, the site for each pyramid was chosen by priest-astonomers so that they would be located on the exacting point in relation to sacred constellations.
Pyramids are massive structures with square foundations and four triangular sides coming to an apex at the peak. One Pyramid(created for the King of Khufu) is made up of 2.3 million stone blocks- each block weighing an average of 2.5-15 tons. This pyramid stands approximately 450 feet and its base is a whopping 13 acres.
Although mostly located in Egypt, some pyramids have been found in Central and South America; leading archeologists to believe in a transcontinental connection to these mystical wonders.
