Rights of Passage, also known as Rites of Passage are rituals handed down from one senior or family member to another. Rights of Passage generally are meant to transform persons by effecting the way they feel, perceive and understand the world around them. Some rights of passage, like getting a driver's license, a boy entering manhood, a young girl becoming a woman, are all forms of rights of passage. Rights of passage are marked by phenomenal transitions that highlight and consecrate the changes in a person's staus.

Rights of passage are events such as birth, puberty, marriage, parenthood, and even death. Becoming part of an association or organization like that of a political affiliation or even participating in a secret society, can also be considered Rights of Passage as well. Overall, Rights of Passage simply means a liminal state of transition from one status to the next -- a process of life steps within society.
