Athletic Trainer What is an ATHLETIC TRAINER? Athletic trainers are health professionals, knowledgeable in various sports medicine areas, and who actively participate in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. Athletic trainers perform injury evaluations and give medical referrals as needed.

Working with athletes from sports teams and other organizations, athletic trainers provide first aid and immediate medical services at sporting events and other health practices to assist athletes with short or long-term medical help as needed.

Athletic trainers are responsible for athletic organization, administration, counseling and sports education. Athletic trainers may work with health professionals; with high school, college or professional sports teams; in gyms and athletic clubs; athletic training facilities; hospitals and private doctors' offices; and in sports medicine clinics.

To become an athletic trainer, one must attend college or other higher education school; and obtain an athletic trainer license. Generally, athletic trainers earn an average of $26 - $42k per year, but may vary depending on education, experience and career site.
