NURSING ASSISTANTS perform routine clinical duties that provide basic patient care under the direct supervision of nursing staff. Nursing assistants perform functions like that of a medical assistant, such as assisting patients with bathing, dressing, grooming, moving patients, and/or exchanging linens.
Unlike physicians' assistants, nursing assistants do not examine, diagnose or treat patients. Nursing assistants may answer telephones, greet and do patient intakes, record and update medical records, appointment scheduling, and hospital admissions.
Nursing assistants may collect laboratory specimens, dispose of contaninated supplies, sterilize medical instruments and may even instruct patients about medication, special diets, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician or other nursing staff.
