Got Chronic Back Pain? Try the Alexander Technique

Researchers recently studied the efficacy of the Alexander technique (in comparison to other methods) in treating chronic back pain in patients. As a randomized trial, nearly 600 back pain sufferers participated. Of those, 144 were recruited into taking Alexander technique lessons. The outcome of the study was very promising: patients, who practiced the Alexander technique achieved long-term health benefits.
But what exactly is the "Alexander technique?" Developed in the earliest part of the 20th Century by F. Matthias Alexander, this mind-body exercise is one that improves range of motion, balance, coordination, and more. Frequently used by a number of professionals such as actors, athletes, and musicians (among others), the Alexander technique teaches individuals how to isolate and effectively adjust body motions into proper alignment. By correcting the ways we move...sitting, standing, walking, etc., we not only project a stronger physical constitution, but we begin to feel that stronger constitution as well. It is, in fact, a restoration of anatomical balance -- and that is how the Alexander technique works as well as it does.
In the article, "Alexander Technique," an example is given on how exactly the Alexander technique affects individuals. By walking with a book placed upon your head, you learn how to maintain balance and coordination; and more importantly, proper spinal alignment. Having the proper posture is key to developing anatomically-correct movements, which in turn, is elemental in alleviating pain issues and maintaining overall wellbeing.
Teachers of the Alexander technique instruct patients (and clients) in self-discipline, and through personalized coaching to promote proper physical posture. This complementary therapy is sometimes used in conjunction with other rehabilitation methods post-surgery or -injury. The Alexander technique may be especially beneficial for those, who suffer from stiff or soar muscles. Like massage therapy without the massage, the Alexander technique's positive influence on the body's posture helps to release muscular tension and stress.
Professional Alexander technique teachers in the United States are typically certified (AmSat certification) by the American Society for the Alexander Technique. Individuals, who are interested in achieving this certification will need to complete a rigorous training course, which often requires roughly 1,600 hours. These Alexander technique programs are generally spread across a three-year term; with additional training provided through continuing education or post-graduate studies. Field practitioners are actually teachers, who teach patients how to use this self-healing method to effectively restore balance, health, and wellness.
