How do You Overcome Binge Eating?
by Martin Applebaum

One of the most common types of eating disorders is binge eating. In fact, it is more common that people think. There are methods to overcome binge eating. We will explore some of those methods. Keep in mind, that if you suffer from this disorder, you should contact a physician as soon as you can.

One of the most important steps to overcome binge eating is to feel good about yourself. Too often, negative self worth and low self-esteem are major causes of eating disorders. Take inventory of your kitchen; remove all the foods that you binge on. If the food is not there, you will not be as tempted to indulge. When you do your grocery shopping, avoid buying the foods that you binge on as well.

The idea is that you want to make it as difficult as possible to start another binge. Keep a record of your eating habits in a logbook. This will help you and your doctor or therapist isolate the issues that trigger your episodes of overeating. This logbook should be very detailed and it should include what you ate, when you ate and how much you ate, along with anything, you feel may help overcome binge eating. Another important step to overcome binge eating is to be open about the problem and talk to someone.

It can be a therapist or someone close to you, as long as they are a good listener. Talking about it can help you deal with the problem and it may prevent you from lapsing into an episode. To overcome binge eating, you need to be able to deal with issues that cause the overeating. Therefore, you need to find things that help you relax, other than eating.

There are many things you can turn to that are safe, such as walking, riding a bike, riding a stationary bike, taking a bath or listening to relaxing music. This step varies on the person, so choose something that is relaxing for you. Another thing that people do to deal with the thoughts of eating all the time is working with their hands.

Try some arts and crafts or build something. This seems to be therapeutic for many people. There are many good books available on how to overcome binge eating. If you suffer from this disorder, remember you are not alone. Talk to someone and seek help as soon as you can.
