Running - Why do I Love it?
by Kareene Koh
If you are not a jogger or runner, it can be pretty difficult to understand the appeal of pounding the pavement. So, why do I love to run? Well, for me there are five reasons that I want to share with you and they are:
- 1. Gives You A Positive Energy Boost
- 2. Gets You Outside
- 3. Creates A Feeling of Freedom
- 4. Do It Alone or with a friend
- 5. No Structure
1. Gives You A Positive Energy Boost
Forget caffeine or energy drinks, there is absolutely nothing like the energy boost I get from a good, hard run. When I wake up feeling slow or lethargic, it may sound incredibly strange, but for me that is when I have to run. Even if I just go for fifteen minutes, I know that I will feel more alert and energized for the rest of my day, if I can just make myself go for a run. Whilst it may seem illogical to exercise when you are feeling exhausted, this is something that really helps me maintain my natural buzz and gives me a morning kick start that absolutely nothing else can replace.
2. Gets You Outside
If you work in a corporate environment, it can be really easy to get into a pattern where you spend days on end indoors. You are sitting in artificial lighting, breathing recycled air and it can literally feel like the life is being drained from you. Running is an opportunity to get outside and breathe fresh air. There are very few conditions in which you cannot run and with modern equipment, there is plenty of gear to help you feel comfortable irrespective of the conditions.
The effect of having a bit of fresh air in your lungs can be phenomenal. Whether it is at the start or end of your day, I guarantee you that a run in the great outdoors will make the world of difference to your perspective.
3. Creates A Feeling of Freedom
The great thing about running for me is that you are able to just let go and do something on your own terms. Sadly, most of us are faced with various situations in life that are best described with words such as responsibility, commitment, reliability or my personal favourite, "behaving like an adult". For me, running is a great chance to just leave all of that behind for a short period of time because you are free to do what you want. A pretty rare thing in most peoples' lives these days.
4. Alone or with a Friend
This plays into my previous point. Running can give you the freedom to do what you like. This includes the freedom to create a social occasion or have some alone time. There are definitely times when running with a friend can be lots of fun and it is something I have done many times. Likewise, running alone can give you some space to refocus or take a break from everything else that is happening in your life. A moment when you are not answerable to anyone can be incredibly precious. I love that flexibility and versatility.
5. No Structure
You can run anywhere, anytime. I run at home and on holidays. I run at all times of day depending on my schedule. I run in lots of different locations around my home town from beaches to parks to around the block. I love that there is no structure in running. It is just great to know that you can always find a way to fit a run in.
So, they are some of the reasons that I love running. I would love to hear what other people have to say as I am sure there are lots more!
