8 Natural Healing Therapies for Chronic Pain
by CarolAnn Bailey-Lloyd
As some of you have already experienced, there are a number of health conditions that sneak up on us and wreck havoc in our daily lives. Some of these health disorders cause immeasurable and disabling pain -- but is conventional medicine always your best option? Some conventional drug therapies cause harmful side effects -- including dizziness, vomiting, hysteria, insomnia, drowsiness, nausea; and in some cases, even death. Invasive surgery is often expensive both financially and physically -- so what's a chronic pain sufferer to do? Following are eight natural healing therapies that may bring long-needed relief to your health and overall wellbeing:
- Acupressure- An ancient Chinese medicine treatment, acupressure has been studied for its ability to treat lower back pain. According to Taiwan researchers, patients were treated with acupressure had a significant reduction in back pain compared to those patients, who received physical therapy.
- Acupuncture - This alternative medicine treatment is now commonly covered by some health insurance providers, and has shown some positive results for the treatment of arthritis. Of course, there are other Oriental medicine therapies like Tai Chi/Qigong that are approved by the Arthritis Foundation as well.
- Chiropractic - The ACA (American Chiropractic Association) recently published a report regarding the efficacy of chiropractic for acute and chronic pain. In the study, patients suffering from chronic low-back pain demonstrated greater improvement and satisfaction compared to primary care medicine.
- Craniosacral Therapy- If you are one of the many individuals, who agonize over chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes, craniosacral therapy has been found to help treat a number of conditions; including whiplash syndrome, and neck and shoulder pain, among other health disorders.
- Deep Tissue Massage - Fibromyalgia sufferers find relief from deep tissue massage. In addition to increasing blood circulation, deep tissue massage has the ability to improve flexibility and range of motion. Other benefits of deep tissue massage include stress relief, pain reduction, reduced stiffness, and insomnia relief.
- Lymphatic Drainage - Cancer patients, who suffer from lymphedema, have found pain relief and swelling reduction from lymphatic drainage massage. This particular form of massage therapy, also referred to as "cancer massage" and "manual lymph drainage," has been used to redirect the flow of lymph in blocked vessels.
- Myofascial Release- While there are many forms of massage therapy, myofascial release was studied for its efficacy on relieving chronic back pain by the Mayo Clinic; with results being published in the 2008 Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Research suggested that myofascial release may be just as effective in treating chronic pain as acupuncture.
- Naprapathy- According to research, naprapathy (aka., naprapathic manual therapy), coupled with evidence-based health care has shown positive results in the care and treatment of back and neck pain. Over 400 patients, who suffered from back or neck disabling pain (naprapathy included massage, spinal manipulation, and stretching) participated in the study. Participants receiving naprapathy as part of an overall treatment regimen, had an improvement with regard to pain.
