Esthetician School: Common Courses of Study
by CarolAnn Bailey-Lloyd
If you like working with skin and would like to help others have a beautiful, healthy-looking appearance, then you should investigate the prospects of becoming a professional esthetics practitioner. But, before you enroll in an esthetician school, you should do a little homework first. One of the initial steps you need to take is to pay a visit to a local esthetics clinic where you can gain a first-hand preview of what a skin specialist does. If you are impressed with the work environment and the specialized treatments that estheticians offer clients, than your next step is to explore an esthetician school near you.
When visiting an esthetician school, you should be prepared with a laundry list of questions for the school's administrator. Some of the questions you may wish to ask include what type of esthetics programs are available and if these programs meet state board regulations. While there are a wide variety of skin care courses, you will need to determine which niche fits your career goals. Remember, one esthetician school may have an entirely different curriculum from another one, so when you start defining your professional aspirations, you need to take a long look at what is available to you and how long the specific program will take to complete. Generally, an esthetician school offers part or full-time programs in skin care, which result in certification. Common studies include infection control, basic health sciences (anatomy/physiology), skin care, basic facial applications/treatments, skin diseases/disorders, hair removal/bleaching, make-up, and other relative coursework.
However, beyond typical coursework in an esthetician school, you will discover in-depth classes like aromatherapy, spa therapies, and even clinical microdermabrasion techniques. This training is offered as both continuing education coursework, as well as part of a comprehensive esthetician course. Advanced studies that are sometimes offered as supplemental education or as part of a more inclusive study involve advanced esthetics chemistry, first aid and CPR, specialized European treatments, holistic nutrition, and specialized machinery, among others.
Like other vocational training schools, an esthetician school varies in course length and tuition. Check with admissions to determine how long your chosen course will be, and what prerequisites are necessary for enrollment. Likewise, many cosmetology schools offer esthetics as part of the overall curricula, so if you're thinking about acquiring dual training, you may wish to consider training in cosmetology.
Finally, the best news about pursuing a career in esthetics or cosmetology, is the fact that job outlook for personal appearance workers is expected to grow by 14 percent through the year 2016, which means job opportunities should be good.
If you (or someone you know) are interested in learning more about careers in health and beauty, let professional training within fast-growing industries like chiropractic, naturopathy, acupuncture, Oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore an Esthetician School near you.
