Who's the Boss? Your Spirit or Your Mind?
by Hu Dalconzo
(Email: hu@holisticlearningcenter.com)

Hu Dalconzo The human school has a beautiful system of balance created between the SELF and the EGO MIND. Your ego mind is your instrument of separateness. Your Self is your vehicle of unity. This transformational paradox creates a very profound polarity between your ego mind and your Self. It manifests as a creative tension in which the ego tries to preserve your separateness, while the Self tries to merge into the unity of all things.

Your ego mind isn't good or bad, right or wrong. It is just the software that your Self uses to create the human identities that enable you to function on the earth plane. Your ego is a survival mechanism that has been evolving for millions of years. Ego transcendence can be quite a challenge because your ego's primary purpose is to keep you safe, sane, and secure. That's why psychologists call them ego... DEFENSES!

"Your comings and goings are no where but where you are!" ZEN PROVERB

Your ego mind acts like a defense attorney who is being paid to supply you with any evidence that you need to keep your psyche convinced that all your actions are justified. Your ego mind will do anything to keep you from experiencing something that it THINKS might harm you. If necessary, it will create false, half true, or imaginary illusions to keep your psyche safe from what it perceives to be harmful. The ego rationalizes your experiences, and the word "rationalizes" means rational lies! We buy our own rational lies in an attempt to feel safe.

Let's review what we learned about HUMAN IDENTITIES. The term HUMAN IDENTITY is used because most people identify themselves as the roles that they play such as a body, broke, sick, fat, a mother, a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer, or a drunk. It is similar to when an actor gets so caught up in a role that he's playing that he acts that way off stage. Most people identify themselves by the roles that they play. However, you are not your roles any more than an actor is the villain or hero he plays. You are first and foremost a spiritual being having a human experience. When your dharmic roles seduce you into identifying who you are by the roles you are playing, you block your creative powers. You lose access to your divine powers because you're identifying yourself as the human actor instead of the divine producer of your life.

You are a SPIRIT that is having a human experience. You have created human identities like mother, daughter, and holistic practitioner to function on the earth plane. Most people think that they are their thoughts and identify themselves as their thoughts to the point where if they think sad thoughts they feel sad, and if they think glad thoughts they feel glad. Again, this is not the truth, it is merely an illusion created by your ego because... "you have thoughts, but you are not your thoughts; you are a SPIRIT!"

When you focus your mind on worldly objects, you'll obtain what is outside of you. When you focus your mind inward with meditation and prayer, you'll discover your real Self. Your Self is the source of the life force energy that makes your heart beat, your eyes see, and your lungs breathe.

Your mind produces an endless series of thoughts like a 24-hour radio station that never goes off the air. The human challenge is to learn how to observe the difference between the thoughts that you think and the LANGUAGE OF FEELINGS of your intuitive Self. Meditating regularly will train you to feel the difference between your spirit and ego mind. Many people erroneously think that the purpose of meditation is to shut off their thoughts. The mind cannot be shut off. However, it can be quieted, observed, and witnessed. By practicing the Spiritual Distinction Meditation you'll develop your ability to distinguish between your Self and your mind. Your ego is fear-based and therefore it needs to be in control to feel safe. Your ego is quite adept at making you believe that it is your intuitive spirit. It does this by whispering thoughts in your ear like, "Hey listen to me... I'm your intuitive spirit!"

"Invisible and subtle is the mind. It flies after fears and fanaticizes whenever it likes; it is difficult to restrain. But a mind that is Self controlled is a source of great joy!" THE DHAMMAPADA

I'm sure that some time in the past you were busy doing something and there was a radio playing in the background. Even though you weren't consciously focusing on the music, you could hear it. When a song came on that you liked, you paid attention to it and maybe you even started to sing. Your ego is constantly producing thoughts, just like a radio station that is constantly transmitting music and advertisements. You need to learn how to train your mind to FEEL the difference between the thoughts that serve you well and the ones that don't.

Imagine that your mind and your spirit both have a human body. Now imagine that for each minute you use your mind to process your life, that minute directly correlates to a minute spent in the gym by your mind's body; and for each minute you use your spirit to process your life, that minute directly correlates to a minute spent in the gym by your spirit's body. Based on this analogy, how big and strong would your spirit's body be as compared to your mind's body? If you're like most people your mind's body would look like Mr. Universe, and your spirit's body would look like a 98-pound weakling. That's why we all need to let our ego mind atrophy as we build our ability to use and put "Spirit First!" in a world that makes the ego a god.

The relationship between your Self and your ego can be compared to two people riding a bicycle built for two. You need to train your ego to sit in the back seat as your humble servant and peddle. Your Self needs to sit up front steering and guiding you down the roads of life towards the fulfillment of your spiritual purpose for living.

Namaste, my soul friends..... Hu Dalconzo
