Halliburton Wastes a Billion Tax Dollars.
by Evelyn Pringle
This past week we learned Halliburton has wasted $1 billion in tax dollars in Iraq through no-bid contracts. We also learned that Cheney was involved in Halliburton being awarded contracts in Iraq. So what does Cheney do when confronted with the trut h? He tells a lawmaker to go f---- himself.
In September 2003, on Meet the Press, Cheney denied, in no uncertain terms, any involvement in the contract process, telling Tim Russert; "I have absolutely no influence of, involvement of, knowledge of in any way, shape or form of contracts led by t he Corps of Engineers or anybody else in the federal government."
A recent Time magazine article called "The Paper Trail: Did Cheney Okay a Deal?" proved this was a lie, by revealing a newly discovered Pentagon email, sent on March 5 2003, from the Army Corp of Engineers, which specifically said Cheney's office "co ordinated" the contract with Halliburton.
3 days after the email was sent, Halliburton was awarded the no-bid contract. As it now stands, its contracts in Iraq are estimated to be worth over $17 billion.
A Cheney spokesman denied the email implied any involvement by Cheney. He said it was simply a heads-up to Cheney about a potentially controversial decision that had already been made.
The money lost belongs to tax payers, so they must decide what the truth is. Any determination will no doubt depend on what the Bush administration's definition of "c-o-o-r-d-i-n-a-t-e-d" IS.
