Improving Employee Pride and Morale

Etienne A. Gibbs, MSW If, as the boss, you insist on doing all the thinking for your employees, or if everything has to be done your way, then you provide little opportunity for your employees to develop pride in their work or for them to develop and maintain positive morale.

Most employees report in national studies that they feel proud about working at their job when the boss created a climate that allows them some degree of independence. And in businesses where this took place, the morale was high and remained so.

However, creating such a work climate takes much management skills so that total control of the business is not lost. It also hinges on the content of a job and the judgment and ability of the person handling it.

Improving employee pride and morale is not difficult; it calls for a concerned approach. Consider implementing these techniques:

* Managing by Objectives: Give your especially capable people a clear idea of the results you want to achieve and leave the methods to them.

* Suggesting Ideas: Rather than dictating them, use the softer approach of suggesting them with the understanding that your employees are free to devise something else which works better for the benefit of the entire organization.

* Delegating Decisions: Enrich their jobs by delegating decisions down the line.

* Encouraging Constructive Suggestions: Guide them to think of constructive suggestions rather than simply presenting them yourself.

* Eliminating Needless Rules:Doing so will allow them freedom to think constructively and creatively. When they think creatively, the ideas keep flowing.

* Allowing Mobility: Do so; as long as your employees produce beneficial results and they methods do not interfere with others.

Bosses who successfully practice these techniques foster excellent employee morale. When you improve the morale of your employees without abdicating your responsibility or without losing control, you'll have highly productive employees.

Remember: When you maximize your potential, everyone wins. When you don't, we all lose.
