I watched it struggle as a young sapling for its arms to reach the sun.
Its limbs were misshapen, crooked and bent. It wasn't pretty like the other cedar trees in the yard, and tall, gangly pines surrounded this one.
The sun's rays shone upon the pines. The little cedar tree stood in the shade below.
The years flew and I guess I didn't pay much attention to the tree until it became deformed. I'd walk my yard and see its crooked, twisted limbs and think how ugly it was compared to the other stately cedar trees standing full and tall.
One day I paid attention. Took notice of the why and how it happened, the reason for its deformity.
I could almost see it elbowing the tall pines as it struggled in its assent to reach the sun's rays. The pines crowded, their needles stabbing the trunk and arms of the cedar tree in their attempt to thwart its growth.
The cedar didn't give up. It pushed its way to the top, and as it did, its trunk and limbs curving, grew to be a tree. No longer a sapling doomed to die. It persevered in its assent and made it to see the sun shining bright upon it.
Like death that comes without notice, the cedar tree was struck by lightening. I saw it's crooked limbs lie broken and wanted to cry. After it's long struggle, this should be its fate?
But then I compared it with life. It's not the length of the road that matters, but how we walk it. Do we jump the hurdles we find in the road, or do we buckle under them and give up? We don't always see the sun above us, even though we know it's there, but instead, wither and die as we give up, the struggle too great.
This cedar taught me to not give up no matter how dark the place in which I stand. To stretch my mind and heart to believe in new horizons, allow my eyes to search until they see the sun.
I want to be like this cedar tree. Not give up in times I fail to see the light and people around me are pushing and shoving, taking away the rays of the sun from my life. Though my limbs be bent and curved, I want to persevere in life until God sends His lightning bolt to remove me from this green earth.
I want to be like this cedar tree. May it rest in peace.
