During the first 16 days of August three commercial airliners crashed to sudden death with all passengers on board. Miles beneath the icy Pacific Ocean a Russian submarine and seven crewmembers waited for rescue from the British Navy. 35 miles from my home two young women and a 17 month-old baby drove their car across the path of a truck losing their lives. 100s of babies in Niger succumbed to starvation and died. In the Gaza Strip defiant settlers screamed their outrage as the eviction process earmarked their homes for demolition. The Iraqis tried but could not complete their new constitution by the American deadline.
On a personal level, my fancy mop gave up the ghost. Four friends developed incurable car problems. Computers caved into the pressure of constant binary activity. And many people experienced vague ugly feelings of fear and fury.
There was no need to turn on the TV to receive the pain, grief and outrage that flooded the psychic airwaves during this time. The pressure of the waxing Moon increased the feeling of powerlessness. People felt it whether they were aware of it or not.
During the first two weeks of August Mercury the Communicator was on vacation. Mercury's job is to make things go. He connects the dots, crosses the "T's", makes sure that motors keep turning, is very involved in all forms of travel and in general keeps everything going. He didn't do that during the first 16 days of August. Not only was Mercury vacationing but he was also in opposition to the very confusing planet Neptune.
Neptune rules all fluids including the great blue bodies of the ocean. Neptune's effect is dissolving. No structure or timetable can withstand his gentle, foggy, wet presence. His overall purpose is to prompt us to higher levels of being through spiritual awareness and universal oneness. In opposition to retrograde Mercury, Neptune holds up a mirror of the eternal to the busyness of daily life. From the daily routine of shopping, traveling, and e-mailing to the sudden depths of the cold green ocean, this opposition took us there.
Mercury is now direct and moving through a final opposition with Neptune. Soon all will come clear. Will the message encoded on the watery bodies of our emotions reflect the lesson of this month? The lesson is painfully clear: we are not indestructible; this present form is not permanent and our lives are not set in stone.
Each disaster, each aching brush of suffering, connects us to the bare bones of truth: we are vulnerable and we are all the same. And out of great vulnerability and unity, through the gaping mouth of pain, comes our sacrificial whisper - we will not forget. We will not forget that beyond the busyness of everyday life lies a deeper eternal view. Thus each day will be heaven, each word one of love, and each exchange one of gentleness.
