When I see eggs in a carton on the grocery store shelves, I'm reminded how lucky we are for the convenience. It wasn't always so. Although as a child, some of those little inconveniences taught us lessons that we carry forward in life.
As a child, I helped with the chores on the farm and one day while raiding the chicken coop of it's precious commodity, I dropped the basket filled to the brim on my way out while trying to set the latch closed.
I remember the scolding I got from my older brother; and while kneeling on the ground picking through the remains of shell and gook, tears streaming down my face and completely beside myself for my mistake, my dad kneeled next to me and helped to recover what hadn't broken. He didn't say anything and I wondered if he thought I was as simple headed as my brother had claimed.
When we were finished, we took the basket over to the porch and sat down on the step. Dad put his arm around my shoulder then and comforted me. He wasn't angry for my mishap, although it would cost us losing over four-dozen eggs.
What he said to me was this, "Learn to take on your chores as any other thing in life, with a better sense of purpose. Instead of using such a big basket and filling it to the brim, try one that's a bit smaller, easier to handle or only fill the large one half full, that way if you have another accident, you won't loose everything you've worked so hard on at one time."
I sure took dad's advice through the years and never put all my eggs in one basket again.
