20 Great Health Tips
by Jane Thurnell-Read

Jane Thurnell-Read 1. Don't take health advice from unhealthy people, even if they are medically qualified.

2. Eating processed meat products such as bacon, sausages and smoked ham increases your risk of getting stomach cancer.

3. Research has shown that water plays a vital role in our immune systems ability to fight infection, making those who drink sufficient less likely to suffer from flu and colds.

4. The Duke University Medical Center (USA) says daily meditation practice can significantly reduce stress-related elevated blood pressure.

5. Antioxidants protect us against cancer and ageing, but a high fat diet means the intestine is lined with lipids that make these vital nutrients difficult to absorb.

6. Reduce the number of times you go to the supermarket. The more often you go the more you are likely to buy unhealthy food.

7. A bath made by adding 4 or 5 drops of chamomile oil, or several cups of chamomile tea is relaxing and can help dry, itching or sunburnt skin.

8. If you suffer from insomnia, consider repainting your bedroom - green is peaceful; blue is tranquilising and violet is calming.

9. Stress, lack of iron and thyroid problems can cause hair loss in women. Check these out rather than just putting up with it.

10. Acupuncture has been shown repeatedly to help with chronic pain. Give it a try by finding an acupuncture therapist.

11. Johns Hopkins School of Medicine researchers have found that men carrying a few extra pounds in early adulthood nearly double their chance of developing painful knee and hip osteoarthritis later in life.

12. Keep healthy snacks at the front of the fridge or cupboard in a clear container. Keep unhealthy stuff at the back of the fridge in a dark container.

13. Take a B vitamin complex before going on holidays if insects love to bite you. It works a treat for most people.

14. Check your urine - it should be the colour of pale straw, although some medication and some supplements will affect the colour. If it's darker, drink more water.

15. Gum disease has been linked to an increase in heart problems. Bizarre as it may seem, flossing your teeth and seeing a dental hygienist may help prevent heart disease.

16. Phthalates from plastic bottles and containers can migrate into food and drink so you end up consuming them. Phthalates have been linked to falling sperm counts and breast cancer. Choose glass containers wherever possible.

17. A summer cold that goes on and on may be hay fever. Find a therapist who specialises in allergies to help you out or use homeopathic remedies.

18. Exercise can help improve breast cancer survival rates. Yet another reason to enjoy doing exercise.

19. Taking probiotics (live yoghurt or as a supplement) regularly may help you if you suffer with gut disorders or an inflammatory disease (e.g. IBS, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, clostridium difficile infection).

20. Suppressing emotions rather than dealing with emotions can lead to tiredness, food cravings and unhappiness. Arrange to see a suitably qualified therapist.
