When your body's fuel delivery system malfunctions and the body develops an inability to convert carbohydrates into glucose, thus prompting your pancreas to secrete insulin, you have a condition called diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetes can be serious and sometimes fatal. Most often doctors will prescribe insulin to control the disease. The combination of diet, exercise and oral medication is the best method to treat the disease.

While you should never stop taking a prescribed dose of insulin, you can add herbs to your daily routine to help regulate your blood sugar levels and stabilize the disease. The natural remedies listed here are designed to assist, rather than replace any other treatment your doctor prescribes. It is always important to remember that any supplemental remedies should be discussed with your medical professional.

Teas: With all teas put a pinch or two of the herb into a pot of black tea and steep for ten minutes before straining. Pour over some ice in a glass and drink cold. Research has shown that these teas can actually help the body use insulin more efficiently.

* Eucalyptus tea has some positive results in reducing high blood sugar.
* Kao Chi Tza is a lycii berry tea
* Maitake tea
* Juniper berry tea regulates sugar levels in some studies
* Suma root, wild yam root, periwinkle, bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves and turmeric herbs
* Red raspberry leaf tea helps with blood sugar balance

Other Drinks

* There is a natural drink called chlorella plant that can be found in many health food stores that has assisted many in sugar balancing
* Cornel fruit drink has also shown positive results in lowering high blood sugar
* Bilberry drinks can be found in the health food store refrigerated section

Tincture
* Formulating a tincture from winter savory and adding it to any drink or oil for a dressing has shown to help with regulation of levels and with the balancing of sugars.

Supplements

* Garlic is a wonder gift from nature that has vast properties to help the human body in healing itself. This includes regulating blood sugar levels. While fresh cloves are the most effective, supplements work well.

* Horseradish is known as a condiment, but it also has been used in parts of the world for centuries as a natural way of controlling blood sugar levels.

* Guar Gum which is actually a legume. In powder form it has shown to flatten the blood sugar curve and help with balancing. Many recommend a bean soup that has one unpeeled onion, kidney beans, carrot, peanuts, fenugreek seeds, bay leaves, garlic cloves, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and Guar Gum that is sworn by. The beans are high in soluble fiber, the onions and skins are rich in quercetin which helps with eye problems associated with diabetes, fenugreek contains six different blood sugar regulating compounds, bay leaves help use insulin more efficiently and the garlic may lower the insulin resistance.

* An Ayurvedic herb used to treat diabetes is Gurmar. This works by blocking sugar absorption.
