Does Anyone You Know have Symptoms of Eating Disorders?

There are numerous symptoms of eating disorders. A person will not necessarily suffer from every symptom if they have a particular eating disorder. In addition, a person may not have an eating disorder if they happen to have some of the symptoms. It is best to consult a physician if you suffer from some of these symptoms. If you suspect a friend or family member may be suffering from an eating problem then try to convince them to seek some help. It is extremely difficult or almost impossible to cure an eating disorder on your own.
The symptoms of eating disorders can overlap with other conditions such as depression. Here is a list of some of the potential symptoms of anorexia and bulimia:
- Obsessed with weight
- Drastic weight loss in a short period of time
- Hiding body shape and weight loss under baggy clothes
- Obsessed with fat content and calories of food
- Continuously exercising
- Running to the bathroom following meals
- Spending long period of time in bathroom with water running to hide vomiting sounds
- Afraid to eat around other people
- Using diet pills, laxatives
- Binging and purging
- Keeping of a food diary
- Low self esteem
- Frequently reading about weight loss
- Losing the menstrual cycle
- Difficulty sleeping
- Constant mood swings
- Loss of sexual appetite
- Constipated
- Light bruising under the eyes
These are the main symptoms of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. As far as compulsive overeating or binge eating there are different symptoms associated with these eating disorders. We have provided a list of the potential symptoms you could encounter in someone with this condition:
Trying all the fad diets Hiding food in unusual places Believing that everything will be better when they lose weight Fear of eating with other people Food is their only friend Sweating profusely Constantly out of breath Making self defeating comments High blood pressure Weight gain Mood swings Difficulty sleeping Tired all the time Leg pain or pain in the joints Increase in weight causing mobility issues Sexual dysfunction
Symptoms of eating disorders can be found in people of all ages. Even children can succumb to an eating disorder. As a parent, be alert to any changes in your child's eating patterns. This is especially important for school age girls. There is so much media coverage concerning appearance and slimness that it can affect young persons self esteem.
